The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea is a national academic institution established in accordance with the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea Act to contribute to the development of national scholarship by giving preferential treatment to scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the development of domestic scholarship and supporting lifelong research and academic activities. Members are elected upon recommendation by the heads of academic societies in each field designated by the Academy or members of the Academy, through strict screening by the Member Review Committee, resolution by the relevant divisional committee, and approval by the general meeting, and the term of office is lifelong. The total number of members is 150, and they are comprised of leading scholars representing Korean scholarship. They perform continuous research activities, national academic policy suggestions, international academic exchanges, and leadership roles in academia.
