이 브로슈어는 외교부가 한반도와 일본 열도 사이의 바다에 대한 "동해" 명칭 확산을 위해 2024년도에 발간하였습니다. 세계 유수의 지도 제작자 및 미디어 매체에서 '동해' 명칭의 정당성을 인정하고 '일본해' 단독 표기 관행에서 벗어나 '동해'와 '일본해'를 병기하고 있습니다. 2014년에는 미국 버지니아주세어 새로운 학교 교과서에 '동해'를 '일본해'와 병기하도록 규정하는 법안이 통과 되었습니다. 대한민국 정부가 실시한 조사에서도 두 이름을 병기하는 지도가 꾸준히 늘고 있음이 확인되었습니다. '동해'와 '일본해'의 병기 방안은 국제 사회에서 통용하는 명칭 원칙에 부합합니다.

Leading cartographers and media outlets around the world have recognized the legitimacy of the name \East Sea\ and are moving away from the practice of using the sole name \Sea of Japan\ to use both \East Sea\ and \Sea of Japan\ simultaneously. In 2014, the State of Virginia in the United States passed a bill requiring new school textbooks to use \East Sea\ and \Sea of Japan\ together. A survey conducted by the South Korean government also confirmed a steady increase in maps using both names.
