인천광역시 계양구 계양산에는 두꺼비과에 속하는 양서류인 두꺼비가 서식하고 있습니다. 두꺼비는 황소개구리와 같은 도입종을 제외하면 우리나라에서 가장 몸집이 큰 양서류로 알려져 있습니다. 주로 습한 숲이나 논 주변 등에서 발견되며, 야행성으로 낮에는 땅속이나 돌 틈 등에 숨어 있다가 밤에 활동합니다. 체내에는 천적으로부터 자신을 보호하기 위한 독샘이 발달해 있어 피부에서 독성 물질을 분비합니다. 이 독 성분은 예로부터 한약재 등 약용 목적으로 사용되어 왔으며, 이로 인한 남획으로 자연 개체수가 크게 줄어들었습니다. 두꺼비는 생태계의 먹이사슬에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있으며, 계양산 일대의 생물 다양성과 생태 환경의 건강성을 나타내는 주요 지표종 중 하나입니다. 현재는 보호와 보전을 위한 관심과 관리가 필요한 야생동물로 간주되고 있습니다.
